Cathedral Market Square at Collingwood & Delaware has a new tenant! Nationwide Insurance has joined Charter One Bank and Hobbs+Black Architects at The Silverman Building. Cathedral Market Square is an ongoing NIP commercial project comprised of the Lukens Building and the Silverman Building. Nationwide's Grand Opening ceremonies were held April 18th. The Nationwide Insurance office is open 10AM to 6PM daily. Charter One Bank is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM except Friday 9AM to 6PM, Saturday 9AM to 2PM, and closed Sunday and Monday.
Kathleen Kovacs, NIP Executive Director joins other community representatives at the June 7th ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of Tam's House, a 3-apartment transitional living facility in a rehabilitated coach house at St Mark's Episcopal Church Properties in the Old West End.
The rehabilitation was accomplished through the efforts of many groups including FOCUS, the City of Toledo,St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Key Bank , McNerney & Son Contractors, and Neighborhoods In Partnership.
They said we'd never make it", says Dennis Lange, owner of Pumpernickels Deli & Café, "but here we are five years later celebrating our anniversary and the payoff of all our loans." Pumpernickels was one of the first businesses to obtain a loan through the City of Toledo's Neighborhood Economic Development Loan (NEDL) program. "We are very pleased at his success," said Kathleen Kovacs, Executive Director of Neighborhoods In Partnership. Here Kathleen and Dennis prepare to burn Dennis' paid in full NEDL loan papers at the Friday, July 8th celebration. Pumpernickels Deli is at 2499 Collingwood Blvd. in the Old West End. Open Daily 10AM to 3PM, Saturday (Breakfast served all day!) 9AM to 3PM and Sunday Brunch 10AM to 2PM.
NIP's 9th annual meeting was held August 10th, 2000 at Pumpernickels Deli & Cafe. Prior to the start of the meeting NIP board members, invited guests and staff went on a trolley tour of the NIP neighborhoods and viewed many of NIP's projects including Museum Place and Glenwood Court Apartments,
the ROAR homes project west of Detroit Avenue, Cathedral Market Square, and a number of single family homes NIP has assisted with grants. "Beginning our 10th year of Community Revitalization" was the theme of this year's dinner meeting which was highlighted by the presentation of a symbolic check to the community for nearly 16 million dollars which represents the amount of investments Neighborhoods In Partnership has attracted to its service area since it was formed in late 1991.
ROAR is a 5.5 million dollar housing project consisting of 50 new 3 and 4 bedroom single family homes. 35 of the homes will be built in the NIP service area west of Detroit Avenue and the remaining 15 will be in the Ottawa Community Development Corporation area further west. This is the first time two Toledo Community Development Corporations have partnered on a housing project of this magnitude. in the Corporate Citizenship category of Business Facilities magazine's 2000 Economic Development Achievement Awards program. The ca. 1890 Silverman Building was renovated by NIP and its partners in 1998 in accordance with the historic preservation standards of the U.S. Department of the Interior and now houses a Charter Bank branch, Nationwide Insurance, and Hobbs + Black Architects. The award from Business Facilities was announced December 10th, 2000.
Nasir Abdul Arush, a student from Southern New Hampshire University's School of Community Economic Development was a guest of NIP in early July, 2001. A native of Somalia, Nasir is a classmate of NIP Executive Director Kathleen Kovacs at the University. Nasir will graduate in 2002 and plans to return to Somalia and implement what he has learned to further the future development policies of his country. While in Toledo Nasir toured our city, attended city and neighborhood meetings and had a chance to visit the Toledo Zoo.
Saturday, April 27, 2002 was the date for the 4th annual City of Toledo, Department of Neighborhoods "Raise The Roof Day." Over 350 volunteers mobilized to make repairs on houses and clean up vacant lots in the 3100 blocks of Glenwood and Maplewood in Toledo's Detroit and Central Avenues area. This year's "Raise the Roof Day" was sponsored by City of Toledo, Department of Neighborhoods, Nationwide Insurance, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and Neighborhoods In Partnership. Neighborhoods In Partnership is a proud recipient of a "Spirit Of Toledo" award from Mayor Carlton Finkbeiner.
Neighborhoods In Partnership has been chosen as one of three Community Development Corporations to participate in a new three year MAIN STREET program in Toledo. The National Trust for Historic Preservation created the MAIN STREET program in the mid-1970's to revitalize economically depressed business districts in America's small towns. The construction phase of the Renascence Ottawa Area Residences (ROAR) Project came to a conclusion on Tuesday, October 30th, 2001 with a ceremonial ribbon cutting at one of the new homes. Ground was broken in August, 2000 for the project and construction started in January, 2001. Neighborhoods In Partnership and Ottawa Community Development Corporation along with Wallick Corporation, National Equity Fund, LISC, joined The City of Toledo on the 5.5 million dollar project.
